Albany, OR. — Albany police officers shot a 21-year-old man during a domestic disturbance involving knives at a North Albany residence Tuesday morning, according to authorities.
At approximately 10:50 a.m. on January 6, officers with the Albany Police Department responded to a report that an older brother was holding a knife against his younger brother inside a home. When officers arrived, they observed at least one individual holding a knife through a door window and issued loud verbal commands.
Police said officers were in close proximity when a man holding a knife opened the door and rapidly moved toward them. Two officers fired multiple rounds from their duty pistols, striking the man several times. Officers immediately rendered medical aid until medics arrived.
The individual shot was identified as Maverick Lyon, 21, who was later reported to be in stable condition and continuing to receive treatment.
Under Benton County’s Deadly Physical Force Plan, an outside agency was requested to investigate the shooting. Albany Police Chief Marcia Harnden asked the Benton County Sheriff’s Office to conduct the investigation into both the use of force and the alleged crimes inside the residence.
Investigators reported that video evidence shows Maverick Lyon had been held at knifepoint by his older brother, John “Dakota” Lyon, 27, prior to police contact. During the incident, Maverick Lyon obtained a separate knife, apparently at his brother’s direction. He was holding that knife when he began to exit the residence. Video also showed Dakota Lyon holding a knife.
The Benton County District Attorney’s Office has charged John Dakota Lyon with Kidnapping in the Second Degree, Attempted Kidnapping in the Second Degree, Attempted Assault in the Second Degree, Unlawful Use of a Weapon, Coercion, Menacing, and Reckless Endangering of Another Person. Maverick Lyon is listed as the victim in those alleged crimes.
Authorities said a probable cause affidavit summarizing the incident and charges has been submitted to Benton County Circuit Court and previously released as a public document. Benton County Parole and Probation has also filed a parole violation against Dakota Lyon for multiple alleged violations.
Both the investigation into the officers’ use of force and the criminal case against Dakota Lyon remain ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Benton County Sheriff’s Office at 541-753-8477.
