President Trump Marks Anti-Communism Week With Call to Defend Constitutional Freedoms
Washington, D.C. — President Donald Trump designated Nov. 1 through Nov. 7 as Anti-Communism Week in a proclamation issued Tuesday. He called on Americans to remember victims of communism and socialism and defend the freedoms protected by the U.S. Constitution.
Trump argued that communist and socialist ideologies have curtailed individual opportunity and subjected people to state control. He linked restrictions on thought, creativity and political expression to poverty, exploitation and violence, and urged Americans to remember those who were denied those freedoms.
The story of America is, above all, a story of a Nation uniting as one, standing up to tyranny, and charting its own destiny as a free and self-governing Republic. As President, I will always protect the founding principles for which so many fought and died. Together, we will defend our Constitution, which protects our freedoms; uphold the dignity of every individual; strengthen the free market, which has made us the most prosperous country ever to exist; and ensure that the promise of America remains alive and well for generations to come.
This week, we honor the victims of socialism and communism by remembering their lives, defending the freedoms that were denied, renewing our resolve to safeguard the Republic entrusted to us, and reminding ourselves that what we have created as a Nation stands as the greatest testament to human freedom in the history of the world.
The proclamation also addressed contemporary U.S. politics. Trump said socialist, communist and what he called “radical leftist ideologies” were finding greater expression in the United States. He pledged that the country would never become communist under his leadership.
Trump invoked the Declaration of Independence’s principles of inherent rights and government by consent of the governed. He also called for protecting constitutional freedoms, upholding individual dignity and strengthening the free market. The proclamation establishes a commemorative observance for the week.
