Rogue River Junior Senior High School Placed in Secure Status Due to Unfounded Report of Student with Gun; Law Enforcement Finds No Credible Threat to School
ROGUE RIVER, Ore. – Rogue River Junior Senior High School returned to normal operations Thursday morning, October 29, after an unfounded report of a student potentially carrying a firearm prompted a precautionary secure status.
The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) and Rogue River Police Department (RRPD) responded to the school at approximately 7:31 a.m. after receiving a report that a student might have a firearm in their backpack while walking to school.
As a precaution, school officials placed the campus in a secure status while law enforcement investigated and worked to ensure the safety of students and staff.
Deputies and officers contacted the student after a parent dropped them off at school but before the student entered the building. Authorities confirmed the student did not have a firearm and determined there was no credible threat to the school.
The secure status was lifted shortly after 8 a.m., and normal school operations resumed. Officials confirmed there is no ongoing threat to students, staff or the school community.
According to the sheriff’s office, a secure status is used to protect students and staff from potential external threats while allowing regular classroom activities to continue. A lockdown, by comparison, is implemented when there is an immediate threat inside or near a school and requires students and staff to remain hidden and quiet.
The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office said it takes all reports involving potential threats to school safety seriously and thanked school officials for their cooperation during the response.
No additional information was available for release.
