Hillsboro Man Sentenced to More Than Six Years in Prison for Fatal Crash That Killed 19-Year-Old Cyclist
HILLSBORO, Ore. — A man who struck and killed a 19-year-old cyclist while speeding through a red light in Hillsboro was sentenced to 75 months in prison after pleading guilty to criminally negligent homicide.
Salvador Jaime Guillen Contreras entered his guilty plea on October 16, 2026, in Washington County Circuit Court. Judge Kathleen Proctor imposed the prison sentence, along with a lifetime revocation of his driver’s license and three years of post-prison supervision.
The fatal crash occurred on June 23, 2026, when Contreras was driving without a valid driver’s license at a high rate of speed. He ran a red light and struck Connor Navarro, who was crossing the intersection in a crosswalk.
An investigation by the Washington County Crash Analysis and Reconstruction Team found that Contreras was traveling 64 mph in an area with a posted speed limit of 40 mph. Investigators also determined that the traffic signal had been red for approximately six seconds when he entered the intersection.
An analysis of Contreras’ cellphone revealed that he had been scrolling through social media and taking screenshots just seconds before the crash. Multiple witnesses also reported that he had been speeding and driving erratically before the collision.
Deputy District Attorney Alicia Gerten prosecuted the case. The Washington County District Attorney’s Office acknowledged the work of the Crash Analysis and Reconstruction Team in investigating the fatal incident.
Contreras will be transferred to the Oregon Department of Corrections to serve his 75-month sentence. Following his release, he will be required to complete three years of post-prison supervision.
