Portland, OR. — A 31-year-old man was sentenced Sept. 3 to 22 years in prison for fatally shooting Sean Smeeden at a North Portland MAX station in 2024.
Moyasar Osman Mohamed-Ahmed pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter and unlawful use of a weapon with a firearm, according to the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office.
The shooting occurred at approximately 8:30 p.m. June 27, 2024, at the MAX platform near North Interstate Avenue and North Prescott Street.
Prosecutors said Smeeden encountered Mohamed-Ahmed at the platform and the two began arguing. Mohamed-Ahmed pulled out a gun during the initial confrontation but did not fire it, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
The two men separated, but Mohamed-Ahmed later returned and again drew the gun. He then shot Smeeden, who died at the scene.
TriMet security cameras recorded the confrontation and shooting, prosecutors said.
Senior Multnomah County Deputy District Attorney Brian Davidson prosecuted the case for the state.
“This sort of violence has no place in our community,” Davidson said after the plea and sentencing. “Our office will aggressively prosecute those who hurt others. We are also sending out the message that crime in and around the TriMet system will not be tolerated.”
The District Attorney’s Office credited Portland Police Bureau Detective Billy Winters for his investigative work and recognized its victim advocates for assisting people affected by the case.
