MULTNOMAH COUNTY, Ore. — The Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office has identified the 71-year-old man who died Tuesday while in custody at the Multnomah County Detention Center.
The deceased was identified as John C. Hanberry following completion of next-of-kin notification, according to an update released by the sheriff’s office.
Deputies assigned to the detention center responded at approximately 7:30 a.m. Aug. 18 to a medical emergency involving Hanberry, who was found unresponsive in his cell.
Deputies and Multnomah County Corrections Health personnel performed lifesaving measures before paramedics from Portland Fire & Rescue and American Medical Response arrived and continued treatment. Hanberry was ultimately pronounced dead at the scene.

The East County Major Crimes Team includes detectives from the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office, Port of Portland Police Department, Gresham Police Department and Oregon State Police.
