PORTLAND, Ore. — A Portland man has been sentenced to 15 years in federal prison after abducting his former girlfriend at gunpoint and taking her across state lines during a 2023 domestic violence incident.
Carlos Miscoot, 28, was sentenced to 15 years in federal prison followed by five years of supervised release, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Oregon.
“Domestic violence cases are incredibly serious and important to me,” U.S. Attorney Scott E. Bradford said. “Domestic violence removes safety from the home and places victims in constant fear. Gun use significantly increases danger.”
According to court documents, Miscoot and the victim had ended their relationship about a year before the incident. Despite the breakup, Miscoot continued contacting her by phone and text and repeatedly appeared at her home without being invited.
On Nov. 2, 2023, Miscoot arranged to meet the woman outside her Portland home to retrieve some of his belongings. When he arrived, prosecutors said, he pulled out a firearm and forced her into his vehicle.
Miscoot then drove the victim across state lines into a remote area of Washington. During the drive, he allegedly continued pointing the firearm at her and making threats.
After parking in a wooded area, Miscoot raped the victim, according to court documents. Prosecutors said he displayed and fired the firearm to prevent her from resisting.
Miscoot then drove the victim back to Portland while continuing to threaten her and warning her not to contact police.
Less than a week later, Miscoot returned to the victim’s home without permission, leading to his arrest.
A federal grand jury in Portland indicted Miscoot on June 18, 2024, charging him with kidnapping, interstate domestic violence and using a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence.
Miscoot pleaded guilty on May 28, 2026, to interstate domestic violence and using a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence.
“Gun use significantly increases danger,” Bradford said. “This woman made clear this relationship was over, but Miscoot sought to continue to control and abuse her. We stopped that and are grateful the victim was able to seek help after this horrific crime.”
The case was investigated by the FBI and Portland Police Bureau. Assistant U.S. Attorney Mira Chernick prosecuted the case.
