UMATILLA COUNTY, Ore. — A 21-year-old Woodinville, Washington, woman was killed Tuesday afternoon when the Honda CR-V she was riding in left Interstate 84, became airborne and crashed onto Highway 395 in Umatilla County.
Oregon State Police said troopers came upon the single-vehicle crash at approximately 2:15 p.m. Aug. 11 near the intersection of Highway 395 and Interstate 84.
According to the preliminary investigation, 51-year-old Jeffrey Downer McGowan of Woodinville was driving eastbound on Interstate 84 near Pendleton when the Honda left the freeway for an unknown reason. The vehicle entered the median, became airborne and landed in the center of Highway 395, where it caught fire and was engulfed in flames.
Responding troopers were able to remove McGowan from the burning vehicle. He was transported to an area hospital with serious injuries.
McGowan’s passenger, 21-year-old Riley Finnegan McGowan, also of Woodinville, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Highway 395 was impacted for approximately two hours while emergency crews and investigators worked at the crash scene.
OSP was assisted by the Pendleton Police Department, Pendleton Fire & Ambulance and the Oregon Department of Transportation.
The crash remains under investigation.
