Oregon — Oregon has shattered its all-time record for acres burned in a single wildfire season, with roughly 2.336 million acres blackened as of early August 10, according to the Northwest Coordination Center. The total already exceeds the previous high of 2.081 million acres set in 2024, with weeks of peak fire weather still ahead. Combined with Washington, the two states have surpassed 3 million acres burned this year, about half the size of Vermont, amid 52 active large fires.
The bulk of the destruction has occurred east of the Cascades, where dry fuels, wind-driven runs, and repeated lightning storms turned isolated starts into sprawling complexes. The Rowe Creek Complex alone has consumed about 367,850 acres across Crook, Jefferson, and Wheeler counties and stands near 79% contained. Other major Oregon blazes include the Big Grass Fire along the Oregon-Idaho border, the Hay Creek Complex (over 200,000 acres, nearly fully contained), and the Coleman Creek Fire. Near Mount Hood, the human-caused Grasshopper Fire has grown past 57,000 acres with limited containment, periodically sending smoke into the Willamette Valley.
Washington has seen roughly 425,000 to more than 500,000 acres burn, with particularly destructive urban-interface fires near Spokane. A complex of three blazes, Old Trails, Autumn Lane, and Fairview—scorched about 10,000 acres but destroyed or heavily damaged more than 900 structures and forced as many as 65,000 people to evacuate at the peak. Other large Washington fires include the Sinlahekin, Little Giant, and Kaiser Canyon.
A landscape primed by drought, fuels, and past policy choices
Officials and climatologists describe a classic setup for extreme fire behavior: a historic low-snowpack winter, followed by a warm, dry spring and a July that delivered only a fraction of normal rainfall across much of the interior Northwest. Nearly the entire region sits in drought. Fuels cured weeks earlier than normal.
Lightning provided the spark for many of the largest complexes. Two major dry-thunderstorm events in mid-to-late July produced thousands of strikes; rain evaporated quickly on the east side, overwhelming initial-attack capacity. Northwest Coordination Center officials note that while several megafires were lightning-ignited, the majority of Oregon’s fires overall this season have been human-caused.
A century of aggressive fire suppression, combined with reduced active management on many federal and some state lands after the 1990s Northwest Forest Plan and related regulatory constraints, left denser, more continuous fuel loads than historical fire regimes would have maintained. Washington’s Department of Natural Resources has shifted course, treating hundreds of thousands of acres toward a 1.25-million-acre goal through thinning, prescribed burning, and mastication, coordinating across federal, tribal, state, local, and private ownership.
Economic analyses reinforce the value of proactive work. Research from the Property and Environment Research Center found that each dollar invested in fuel treatments on national forests in the Pacific Northwest yields between $5 and $6 in reduced federal firefighting expenditures. Across the West, treatments delivered an average $3.73 in benefits through avoided smoke and property damages, with larger landscape-scale projects and prescribed burns showing the strongest returns, treated areas burned 36% less total area and experienced 26% lower moderate-to-high severity impacts.
These findings highlight a persistent imbalance: suppression delivers immediate, visible results and claims a large share of budgets, while prevention’s benefits are longer-term and harder to observe. Regulatory hurdles under the National Environmental Policy Act, Endangered Species Act, and air-quality rules can slow or limit the scale of thinning and prescribed fire. Practical approaches that expand incentives for private landowners, streamline approvals for low-risk treatments, and treat forests as working landscapes offer cost-effective ways to reduce both fire severity and the taxpayer burden of endless reactive spending—without requiring ever-larger federal appropriations.
Smoke reaches far beyond the flames—into Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming
Smoke has been a near-constant companion across much of Oregon and Washington for weeks. Fine particulate matter has driven air-quality indices into the unhealthy and, in places east of the Cascades, hazardous range. Central Oregon communities have seen extreme readings; intermittent plumes have pushed west of the Cascades into the Willamette Valley and Portland metro.
The plume has traveled well beyond the Northwest. NASA visualizations of mid-July through early August show extensive eastward transport of smoke from Oregon and Washington fires, degrading air quality across Idaho, Montana, and North Dakota before reaching farther east. In Idaho, Boise and communities along the Oregon border recorded very unhealthy levels earlier in the season, with National Weather Service alerts covering large portions of the state.
Montana’s Department of Environmental Quality has issued repeated air-quality alerts for the western third of the state, covering counties including Beaverhead, Gallatin, Missoula, Ravalli, Flathead, and others. Officials noted that the bulk of the smoke over Montana has come from the massive Oregon and Washington fires, with additional contributions from local and Idaho-border blazes in the Bitterroot, Pioneer, and Sapphire mountains. Readings have reached unhealthy levels in places such as Columbia Falls and Dillon, and unhealthy for sensitive groups in Billings, Butte, Hamilton, and elsewhere.
Wyoming has also felt the effects. The Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality issued air-quality alerts for western and central portions of the state, citing smoke from western U.S. wildfires that limited visibility and prompted health advisories for the elderly, young children, and those with respiratory conditions. Local reports described orange sunrises and sunsets driven largely by Pacific Northwest smoke funneled across the region.
Health impacts follow the particles: elevated risks of respiratory and cardiovascular strain, particularly for sensitive groups. Outdoor recreation, camps, and tourism have been disrupted. The economic costs—lost visitor days, higher health-care utilization, and agricultural effects, compound the direct suppression expenses already measured in the hundreds of millions of dollars, ultimately borne by taxpayers and ratepayers.
Resources stretched thin
Sixty-three percent of the nation’s available firefighting resources are currently assigned to Oregon and Washington. National Guard units have been activated, and crews operate under the highest national preparedness level. Containment progress on several large fires is real, aided by occasional milder weather, yet officials emphasize that the season is only roughly halfway through its traditional window.
Jean Nelson-Dean of the Northwest Coordination Center has repeatedly stressed prevention: the public can reduce the burden on stretched crews by eliminating the human-caused fires that still dominate the ignition ledger. Cooler temperatures and higher humidity may offer temporary relief in some areas, but the underlying drought and fuel conditions will persist until significant seasonal rains arrive.
For Oregonians, the 2026 season underscores that resilience depends on multiple pillars: rapid initial attack, responsible individual behavior to limit human starts, active land stewardship that reduces fuel continuity through thinning and prescribed fire where science supports it, and clear-eyed accounting of both natural variability and the costs of different management choices. Expanding practical, incentive-based tools on private and working lands, and reducing barriers that slow cost-effective treatments, look to be an important part of the conversation to help lower the scale of future seasons without relying solely on larger suppression budgets. The acres already blackened will reshape landscapes, local economies, and community recovery efforts for years. The smoke, for now, remains part of the daily reality across the state and well beyond.
