HILLSBORO, Ore. — A Washington County judge has sentenced a Hillsboro man to 15 years in prison after a jury found him guilty of multiple domestic violence-related crimes stemming from a series of assaults against his girlfriend.
On July 21, 2026, Judge Erik Buchér sentenced Armando Duran-Maya to 15 years in the Oregon Department of Corrections following his convictions for unlawful use of a weapon, menacing constituting domestic violence, fourth-degree assault constituting domestic violence, two counts of tampering with a witness, and extortion. The case was prosecuted by the Washington County District Attorney’s Office’s specialized Domestic Violence Team.
According to prosecutors, Duran-Maya assaulted his girlfriend multiple times over several days in December 2024. During one of the attacks, he threatened the victim with a machete, causing her to fear for her life.
The victim initially reported the assaults to police but attempted to withdraw her report two days later. Investigators later determined that while Duran-Maya was being held at the Washington County Jail, he contacted family members and friends and encouraged them to pressure the victim into falsely claiming she had fabricated the allegations.
Prosecutors said that after Duran-Maya was released from custody, he tracked down the victim and allegedly assaulted her again. Rape charges related to that incident remain pending in Multnomah County.
During the sentencing hearing, Judge Buchér described the case as one of the most egregious domestic violence cases he had encountered.
The court also considered Duran-Maya’s extensive criminal history when imposing the enhanced sentence.
According to prosecutors, Duran-Maya raped a woman in her Portland apartment during the 1990s. The case remained unsolved until 2003, when his DNA was entered into law enforcement databases following his conviction for attempted first-degree arson involving an apartment building in Portland.
While released pending trial in the rape case, Duran-Maya fled Oregon. Authorities eventually located him in Washington state in 2006 after a law enforcement pursuit. He was convicted of first-degree rape in 2007.
After serving a lengthy prison sentence, Duran-Maya was released in 2016 and deported to Mexico. Prosecutors said he later reentered the United States illegally. In 2023, a Hillsboro community member reported that he was carrying a loaded firearm and threatening family members. Authorities also said Duran-Maya failed to report to Parole and Probation as required and did not register as a sex offender after returning to the country.
The Washington County District Attorney’s Office praised the victim for her courage throughout the investigation and prosecution. Prosecutors also recognized the investigative efforts of the Hillsboro Police Department, Portland Police detectives, Washington County Parole and Probation, and the District Attorney’s Office Domestic Violence Investigators.
Duran-Maya will serve his 15-year sentence in the custody of the Oregon Department of Corrections.
