POLK COUNTY, Ore. — The SW Polk Fire District is asking for the public’s assistance after one of its wildland firefighting vehicles was vandalized, causing significant damage to equipment used to protect the community during emergency responses.
According to the fire district, the vandalism occurred sometime within the past several days when an individual or individuals intentionally damaged a district brush rig. The incident resulted in the destruction of several hundred feet of fire hose, equipment that is critical for responding to wildland fires and other emergencies.
Fire officials also discovered that the apparatus’ pump had been tampered with. District personnel were able to repair the pump and return the vehicle to service, but the damaged fire hose must be replaced, creating an unexpected expense for the district and the community it serves.
The incident has been reported to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, which is investigating the case.
Authorities are asking anyone who witnessed suspicious activity or has information related to the vandalism to contact the SW Polk Fire District or the Polk County Sheriff’s Office and reference case number DAS26008802. Investigators say even small details could help identify those responsible.
“Our firefighters depend on this equipment to protect lives, property, and natural resources,” the SW Polk Fire District said in a statement. “Acts of vandalism not only damage valuable emergency equipment but also place an unnecessary financial burden on the community. We appreciate any information that may help identify those responsible.”
The SW Polk Fire District thanked residents for their continued support and cooperation as the investigation continues.
