SALEM, Ore. — Five people were injured, four of them seriously, after an explosion at a northeast Salem residence late Saturday night that investigators believe was likely caused by the improper use of illegal fireworks.
According to the Salem Police Department, officers and Salem Fire personnel responded at approximately 10:44 p.m. on July 4, 2026, to reports of an explosion at a home in the 4200 block of Prairie Star Court NE.
When emergency crews arrived, they found multiple people suffering from injuries. Five individuals were transported to area hospitals, with four sustaining significant injuries. Authorities said none of the injuries are considered life-threatening at this time.
The blast caused extensive damage beyond the residence, damaging nearby vehicles and neighboring homes. Investigators said the explosion was powerful enough to impact the surrounding area.
A preliminary investigation indicates the explosion was likely caused by illegal mortar-style fireworks that were being used outside of manufacturer safety guidelines.
Detectives with the Salem Police Department’s Felony Crimes Unit are leading the investigation. The Salem Police Bomb Squad, the Salem Fire Department’s Fire Marshal, and the department’s Crime Lab also responded to assist with the post-blast investigation.
The investigation remains ongoing, and no charges have been filed as authorities continue to determine the circumstances surrounding the explosion.
