SALEM, Ore. — A 54-year-old Salem man died Tuesday after suffering an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound while officers were responding to a call involving a reported probation violation and concerns that he was armed.
According to the Salem Police Department, officers were dispatched at approximately 11:49 a.m. on June 30 to the 1000 block of Fir Street S after a 38-year-old Salem woman reported that a man was sitting outside her apartment despite a court-imposed condition of his probation prohibiting contact with her. The woman also told dispatchers the man was aware police had been called and was known to carry a firearm.
Because of the reported presence of a firearm, officers deployed a drone to help locate the man before arriving at the scene. The drone operator found the man sitting inside a vehicle parked directly beneath the woman’s apartment.
As responding officers arrived, a gunshot was reported from inside the vehicle. Officers immediately secured the area, allowing emergency medical personnel to provide treatment to the man.
The man was transported to Salem Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Police said the injury appeared to be self-inflicted.
During the response, Owens Street and River Road were closed for approximately 30 minutes to ensure public safety.
The man’s identity has not been released pending notification of next of kin.
The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone seeking additional information is asked to contact the Salem Police Department.
