GRESHAM, Ore. — A suspect wanted in connection with the fatal 2025 shooting of a 17-year-old at Gresham’s Vance Park has been arrested in Washington, marking a significant development in a case that has remained under investigation for more than a year.
The Gresham Police Department announced Thursday that Camerino Vides was taken into custody in Spokane, Washington, after local authorities identified him while he was being held on unrelated charges.
Vides is accused in the Jan. 23, 2025, killing of Jorge Ovidio Mateo Vasquez, 17, who was shot shortly after 4 p.m. while playing on the futsal court at Vance Park. Investigators described the shooting as an apparent unprovoked attack.
Detectives publicly identified Vides as the suspect on March 13, 2025, releasing his name and photograph while asking for the public’s help locating him. Investigators renewed that appeal on the one-year anniversary of Jorge’s death as the search continued.
On Tuesday, Spokane authorities identified a suspect in custody as Vides. Gresham detectives worked alongside Spokane law enforcement to confirm his identity.
Vides is currently being held in Washington pending extradition to Oregon, where he is expected to face charges related to the homicide.
“We’re grateful to our detectives, our law enforcement partners in Spokane, and everyone who shared information that helped keep this case in the public eye,” Gresham Police Chief Travis Gullberg said in a statement. “This arrest brings us one step closer to justice for Jorge and his family.”
The homicide investigation remains active, and additional details about Vides’ extradition and upcoming court proceedings have not yet been released.
