LINCOLN COUNTY, Ore. — A bias crime investigation conducted by the Oregon State Police culminated in an officer-involved shooting Wednesday afternoon that left a 49-year-old suspect dead.
According to investigators, Oregon State Police had developed probable cause to arrest Daniel Edward Noonan, 49, in connection with multiple bias crime allegations stemming from an incident that occurred June 11 at the intersection of Highway 101 and the Siletz Highway (Highway 229).
At approximately 3:51 p.m. on June 17, Oregon State Police troopers and officers with the Newport Police Department responded to a residence at 1545 Siletz Highway to take Noonan into custody.
Authorities said that within moments of arriving, officers encountered a man who immediately opened fire on them. Officers returned fire, using deadly physical force.
Noonan was critically wounded in the exchange. He received emergency medical treatment at the scene and was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
No law enforcement officers or members of the public were injured during the incident.
The officers who discharged their weapons have been placed on administrative leave in accordance with agency policy and requirements outlined under Oregon Senate Bill 111.
The Lincoln County Major Crimes Team, led by the Lincoln City Police Department, is investigating the shooting in coordination with the Lincoln County District Attorney’s Office. Officials said no additional information is being released at this time.
The original bias crime investigation remains ongoing.
