EUGENE, Ore. — A driver was rescued Thursday afternoon after a vehicle crashed down a steep embankment in South Eugene, prompting a complex response from Eugene Springfield Fire crews.
Just before 3 p.m. on June 11, emergency responders were dispatched to a reported vehicle crash near 52nd Street and South Willamette Street. The incident was initially detected through an automatic crash notification generated by a smartwatch, which alerted 911 dispatchers that a person had been involved in a crash and was trapped upside down on a hillside.
The first Eugene Springfield Fire engine to arrive, responding from the South Hills station, located the wrecked vehicle at the end of a long rural driveway. Crews found the vehicle overturned on its roof down a steep embankment, creating significant access and rescue challenges.
Firefighters spent an extended period extricating the sole occupant from the vehicle. The driver was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Officials said the crash scene presented multiple hazards that required careful coordination. The vehicle had struck a large propane tank, knocking it loose and sending it tumbling down the hillside along with the vehicle. The damaged tank was leaking propane, creating an additional safety concern.
Responders also had to contend with elevated wildfire risk in the area and nearby high-voltage power lines while conducting rescue operations.
According to Eugene Springfield Fire, the incident mirrored the types of complex emergency scenarios frequently used in command training and promotional testing exercises due to the combination of simultaneous risks and operational challenges.
Crews were able to stabilize the injured occupant while managing the propane leak, fire hazards, difficult terrain, and access issues. In total, five fire crews, one medic unit, and two chief officers responded to the scene. Personnel coordinated patient care, vehicle extrication, equipment transport, fire risk mitigation, and the safe removal of the driver from the embankment before transport to the hospital.
No additional injuries were reported, and the cause of the crash has not been released.
