DESCHUTES COUNTY, Ore. — A Redmond woman died following a two-vehicle crash Friday afternoon on U.S. Highway 97 near the Peter Skene Ogden Rest Area in Deschutes County, according to the Oregon State Police.
Troopers responded to the crash at approximately 12:44 p.m. on June 5 near milepost 113.
A preliminary investigation found that a gray Nissan Titan, driven by 64-year-old Thomas Dwayne Dooms of Redmond, was traveling northbound on Highway 97 when it attempted to make a left turn into the Peter Skene Ogden Rest Area. Investigators said the pickup failed to yield to oncoming southbound traffic and was struck by a black Honda Passport driven by 21-year-old Isaias Ishar Abianeda of Madras.
A passenger in the Nissan, 82-year-old Mary Lou Dooms of Redmond, suffered serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital. She later died from her injuries.
Thomas Dooms was also seriously injured and transported to an area hospital for treatment.
Two passengers in the Honda — 20-year-old Kristen Farrester of Culver and 25-year-old Christian Luke Pyle of Bend — sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to a hospital. Abianeda was reportedly uninjured.
The crash closed or impacted portions of Highway 97 for approximately three hours while investigators processed the scene and crews cleared the roadway.
Oregon State Police were assisted by the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Redmond Fire & Rescue, Air Link Ambulance, and the Oregon Department of Transportation.
The crash remains under investigation.
