KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. — Klamath County Fire District 1 has recognized two local residents for their extraordinary actions during a recent residential fire, crediting their quick thinking and bravery with helping protect a life and supporting an effective emergency response.
Patrick Carroll was presented with the Distinguished Citizen Service Award, while Lia Adamson received the Emergency Response Activation Award for their efforts during the incident.
According to fire officials, Carroll sprang into action after noticing smoke coming from a nearby home. He immediately alerted another bystander to call 911 before moving closer to the residence to determine whether anyone was inside.
As fire conditions rapidly worsened, Carroll approached the home from the rear and was able to identify and communicate with an occupant who remained inside the structure. Despite the danger, he continued his efforts and ultimately helped guide the occupant safely out of the burning home.
Officials said Carroll also prevented the occupant from re-entering the residence when she attempted to go back inside to rescue a pet. Fire officials noted that his intervention likely prevented a tragic outcome. The occupant later described Carroll as a “hero.”
Adamson was also recognized for her role in the emergency. Fire officials said she immediately called 911 and provided dispatchers with critical information about the fire. She worked to confirm that an occupant was still inside the residence while maintaining communication with both Carroll and emergency dispatchers.
Her calm and clear communication helped first responders understand the urgency of the situation and the conditions at the scene before they arrived, according to the fire district.
“Emergency scenes are chaotic by nature, and the actions taken by Patrick and Lia made a meaningful difference in the outcome of this incident,” said Fire Chief Brent Knutson. “Their quick thinking, courage, and willingness to act in a critical moment reflect the very best of our community.”
Klamath County Fire District 1 expressed its gratitude to both Carroll and Adamson, saying their actions exemplified selflessness, courage and a commitment to helping others during a crisis.
