SALEM, Ore. — Dog owners in Salem will soon have a new destination for recreation and socialization as the city prepares to open a two-zone dog park at Geer Community Park on June 5.
Designed with the needs of both pets and their owners in mind, the new facility features two separate fenced areas tailored to different activity levels. The Gentle Zone (Zone A) is intended for quieter, older, or smaller dogs that prefer low-energy play, while the Active Zone (Zone B) is designed for more energetic and playful dogs.
City officials emphasized that aggressive dogs are not permitted in either area. Pet owners are responsible for monitoring their dogs’ behavior, maintaining voice control at all times, and cleaning up after their pets to help keep the park safe and welcoming.
The dog park includes several features aimed at enhancing safety and enjoyment. Each zone is equipped with a double-gated entry system to help prevent dogs from escaping. Additional amenities include small mounds for exploration, newly planted trees that will provide shade as they mature, and grass swales designed to slow and filter stormwater runoff.
The project also incorporates accessibility-focused improvements for visitors. Paved pathways provide easy access throughout the facility, while covered seating areas offer protection from both sun and rain. Dog-friendly water stations with easy-reach activation buttons are also available.
In addition to the dog park, a new reservable picnic shelter will open nearby. The shelter is expected to serve as a gathering space for birthday parties, family picnics, and other small community events, adding another recreational amenity to Geer Community Park.
The new dog park and picnic shelter are scheduled to open to the public on June 5.
