EUGENE, Ore. — A fast-acting resident helped prevent a potentially more serious apartment fire Friday morning in Eugene’s Jefferson Westside neighborhood, according to Eugene Springfield Fire.
Firefighters were dispatched just after 7 a.m. to the Jade West Apartments, located at 871 W. 8th Ave., after a resident pulled the building’s fire alarm and called 911 to report smoke coming from a first-floor apartment.
The first fire unit arrived within three minutes and encountered heavy, dark smoke coming from the apartment. Residents at the scene also reported that a person might still be inside, prompting firefighters to immediately launch both a search and fire attack operation.
Crews forced entry into the apartment and quickly searched for any occupants while simultaneously working to extinguish the fire. No victims were found inside, and firefighters successfully contained the blaze to the apartment where it originated.
Although the fire did not spread beyond the unit, smoke infiltrated neighboring apartments. Firefighters used ventilation fans to clear smoke from the affected residences.
No injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Fire officials credited the resident who activated the fire alarm and called 911 for helping to alert occupants and emergency responders quickly, noting that the incident could have had a much more serious outcome without that prompt action.
