SALEM, Ore. — A 16-year-old boy is in custody at the Marion County Juvenile Detention Center following a shooting in downtown Salem last week that left another teenager injured.
According to the Salem Police Department, officers responded around 6:20 p.m. on May 20 to reports of a shooting near the 220 block of High Street SE. When officers arrived, they found a 17-year-old male suffering from a gunshot wound. Witnesses reported the suspect fled the scene before police arrived.
Officers rendered first aid and treated the victim’s injuries until Salem Fire medics arrived and transported the teen to Salem Hospital. Police said the victim’s injuries were not considered life-threatening.
Authorities from multiple agencies, including the Salem Police Department, Oregon State Police, and the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, conducted an extensive search for the suspect using drones and police canines. Despite the coordinated effort, the suspect was not located that evening.
Investigators with Salem Police’s Violent Crimes Unit later identified the suspect and continued efforts to locate him. Early Tuesday morning, detectives learned the juvenile had turned himself in at the Marion County Juvenile Department.
The suspect has been lodged at the juvenile detention center and faces several charges, including first-degree assault and unlawful use of a weapon.
The investigation remains ongoing. Further questions regarding the case are being referred to the Marion County District Attorney’s Office.
