As summer arrives and neighbors spend more time outdoors, community leaders are encouraging residents to take simple steps to strengthen neighborhood connections and improve safety.

Hosting a backyard barbecue, sharing fresh garden produce, or simply introducing yourself to nearby residents can help foster a stronger sense of community while also making neighborhoods safer and more connected.

Officials say one of the greatest benefits of knowing your neighbors is the added sense of security it creates. Residents who are familiar with one another are more likely to notice suspicious activity or recognize when something seems unusual.

Neighbors who regularly check in with one another may notice warning signs early, such as an open garage door left unattended late at night or a resident who has not collected mail for several days. In some cases, that awareness can help prevent theft or property damage, or alert others to a medical emergency or accident requiring assistance.

Community advocates encourage residents to take a moment to reach out if something appears out of the ordinary by calling, texting, or knocking on a neighbor’s door.

Building strong neighborhood relationships can also prove invaluable during emergencies such as severe weather, wildfires, power outages, or other natural disasters. Residents who know and trust one another are often better prepared to share supplies, offer shelter, or provide emotional support during difficult situations.

Beyond safety and emergency preparedness, officials say neighborly connections help create a stronger sense of belonging and contribute to healthier, more resilient communities.

Residents are encouraged to use the summer months as an opportunity to get to know the people living nearby and help build a safer and more supportive neighborhood environment.
