GOLD HILL, Ore. — The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a suspect in connection with a fatal hit-and-run crash that killed a pedestrian early Saturday morning near Gold Hill.
Authorities identified the victim as Justin David Hannaford, 47, of Gold Hill. Sheriff’s officials extended condolences to his family and friends following the incident.
Deputies arrested Shavon Marie Walker, 44, of Gold Hill, at approximately 6 p.m. Saturday in the 7100 block of West Evans Creek Road. Walker is charged with failure to perform the duties of a driver to injured persons, a Class B felony when a death results from the collision. She was lodged in the Jackson County Jail. The case remains under investigation.
According to investigators, Jackson County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded at 3:12 a.m. Saturday, May 16, to a report of a man down on Access Road near the Jackson County Fire District 3 Gold Hill Station and Blackwell Road. Medics were dispatched, but Hannaford died from his injuries before emergency personnel arrived.
The Jackson County Serious Traffic Accident Reconstruction (STAR) Team assisted with the investigation. Detectives determined the crash occurred sometime between 1:30 a.m. and 3:12 a.m.
Investigators said the vehicle involved was believed to have been traveling north on Access Road, near Interstate 5 Exit 40, toward the intersection with Blackwell Road. Early in the investigation, authorities said the suspect vehicle likely sustained damage to the headlight, hood, or windshield.
The sheriff’s office said the investigation is ongoing and no additional information is being released at this time.
