BEAVERTON, Ore. — The Beaverton Police Department is alerting the public to an organized theft crew believed to be operating across at least five western states, targeting gyms, fitness centers, and workout facilities in a coordinated pattern of identity theft and fraud.
Investigators say the group’s method involves stealing wallets, credit cards, and other personal belongings from patrons while they are exercising and often distracted. Once the items are taken, the suspects quickly move to nearby retail stores—most commonly Costco and Best Buy—where they make rapid, high-value purchases before victims are aware their property has been stolen or have time to cancel their accounts.
Authorities report the suspects frequently focus on high-value merchandise, including electronics, gold bars, and jewelry.
In one incident on April 30 in Beaverton, three male suspects believed to be connected to the crew allegedly stole credit card information from a gym-goer. Investigators say one suspect then fraudulently obtained a Costco membership using the victim’s identity. The group subsequently used the stolen credit card to purchase $18,759.96 in gold bars from a Costco location in Beaverton.
Police describe the suspects as Eastern European males and believe they may be linked to similar theft and fraud cases across the western United States.
The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities are asking for the public’s assistance. Anyone who recognizes the suspects or has information related to the case is urged to contact Beaverton Police through non-emergency dispatch at 503-629-0111 or reach out to Detective Mat Groshong at mathewgroshong@beavertonoregon.gov.
