OREGON CITY – Clackamas Community College’s Theatre Department is set to bring a high-energy punk rock production to the stage this spring with its presentation of Green Day’s American Idiot, a two-time Tony Award-winning musical based on the band’s Grammy Award-winning multi-platinum album.
The production, which also incorporates select songs from Green Day’s follow-up album 21st Century Breakdown, pushes the boundaries of traditional musical theatre with its fast-paced storytelling and raw, concert-like energy.
American Idiot follows three disillusioned friends—Johnny, Will, and Tunny—who leave behind suburban life in search of meaning in the city. Set against the backdrop of post-9/11 America, the story explores themes of political unrest, war, addiction, love, and personal identity as the characters confront a rapidly changing world.
Directed by Allison Moon with musical direction by Dave Cole, the production features an ensemble cast of Clackamas Community College students. The creative team also includes scenic and lighting design by Chris Whitten, prop design by Allison Moon, costumes by Aiden McFarland, and choreography by Wesley Roberts.
Performances will run May 21 through May 31 at the Niemeyer Osterman Theatre, located at 19600 Molalla Ave. in Oregon City. Showtimes are Thursdays and Fridays at 7:30 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays at 2:30 p.m.
An opening night reception will be held May 21 at 6:30 p.m. in the Niemeyer Lobby, featuring live music by Tokyo Joe and complimentary refreshments with ticket purchase. Attendees will also be entered into a drawing for Green Day merchandise.
Tickets are priced at $18 for adults, $16 for seniors age 62 and older, and free for all students. A $1 discount is available for online purchases. Reservations can be made at www.clackamas.edu/theatre or by calling 503-594-3153.
