PORTLAND, Ore. — On Saturday, May 9, the Hollywood Lions Club will hold its semi-annual food drive at the Hollywood Grocery Outlet from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., collecting non-perishable food items to support the Community for Positive Aging.
Organizers are encouraging community members to donate a wide range of shelf-stable foods, including items for pets. Sealed, unopened pet food will also be accepted, recognizing the important role pets play in the lives of many seniors.
Donations will directly benefit the Community for Positive Aging, a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of adults age 55 and older in Multnomah County. The group provides programs and services focused on social connection, health and wellness, independence, and lifelong learning, with a particular emphasis on supporting seniors in the Hollywood neighborhood.
In addition to food donations, the Hollywood Lions Club is also asking residents to consider contributing used eyeglasses and hearing aids for the Oregon Lions Sight & Hearing Foundation, which helps provide vision and hearing assistance to those in need.
Organizers say the event comes at a critical time, as many Portland-area residents continue to feel the pressure of rising costs for food, rent, utilities, medical care, and transportation. According to statewide estimates, roughly one in five Oregonians experience food insecurity.
The impact is especially significant among older adults, who may face isolation alongside financial strain. Many seniors also rely on pets for companionship and emotional support, prompting organizers to highlight the importance of including pet food donations in this year’s drive.
The Hollywood Lions Club, which is celebrating its 97th anniversary this year, has long been active in local service efforts. The organization maintains a close partnership with the Community for Positive Aging, including representation on its board of directors.
Club members say the annual effort reflects a longstanding commitment to community service.
“Where there’s a need, there’s a Lion,” the group noted, underscoring its mission to support neighbors in need across Portland and beyond.
