SALEM, Ore. — Authorities are investigating an officer-involved shooting that left a 37-year-old man dead late Saturday night following a reported disturbance near Woodburn.
According to officials, at approximately 10:41 p.m. on May 2, Jackson Ryan, a police officer with the Woodburn Police Department, responded to a 911 call reporting an aggressive individual on Arney Road along the city’s border in Marion County.
Upon arrival, Officer Ryan encountered Israel Hernandez-Martinez in the roadway. Police said Hernandez-Martinez was holding multiple tire irons when contact was made. A confrontation followed, during which Officer Ryan discharged his firearm, striking Hernandez-Martinez.
Additional officers responded to the scene and attempted life-saving measures, but Hernandez-Martinez was pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident is being investigated under Marion County’s officer use-of-deadly-force protocol, which requires an independent agency to lead such inquiries. The Salem Police Department is heading the investigation, with assistance from the Marion County Sheriff’s Office and the Oregon State Police.
Officials said no additional information will be released at this time as the case undergoes review by a Marion County grand jury, which is standard procedure in officer-involved deadly force incidents. Future updates will be provided by the Marion County District Attorney’s Office.
Questions regarding the case can be directed to Chief Deputy District Attorney Brendan Murphy.
