DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ore. (April 27, 2026) – A pedestrian was killed Saturday night after being struck by a vehicle along Highway 42 in Douglas County, according to the Oregon State Police.
Troopers responded to the crash at approximately 10:59 p.m. on April 25 near milepost 76. A preliminary investigation found that a red Ford Focus, driven by 38-year-old Leo Thomas Durden III of Roseburg, was traveling westbound through a green light when it struck a pedestrian in the roadway.
Authorities said the pedestrian, identified as 40-year-old Vivian Kuntz of Eugene, was crossing from Grant Smith Road toward Highway 99 and did not have a walk signal at the time of the crash.
Kuntz was pronounced dead at the scene.
Durden and his passenger, 35-year-old Caitlinn Ann Durden of Roseburg, were not injured.
The highway was impacted for approximately four hours while crews conducted an on-scene investigation.
Oregon State Police were assisted by Central Douglas Fire and Rescue, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, the Winston Police Department, and the Oregon Department of Transportation.
