ALBANY, Ore. — A tense standoff in downtown Albany ended peacefully Monday afternoon after police took a wanted man into custody following several hours of negotiations near the Linn County Courthouse.
According to the Albany Police Department, officers responded at approximately 9:36 a.m. to reports of a wanted subject, identified as 43-year-old Alan William Dude of Albany, parked in a vehicle in the 300 block of Southwest 4th Avenue. Authorities said Dude had failed to appear for a scheduled trial in Linn County Circuit Court earlier that day.
When officers made contact, they observed what appeared to be a firearm in Dude’s hand. Police immediately established a secure perimeter and implemented safety protocols to protect the public. Streets in the surrounding area were closed, and nearby buildings—including the Albany City Hall and local businesses—were placed on lockdown.
The Linn Benton Regional SWAT Team responded to assist, along with crisis negotiators who attempted to de-escalate the situation. After prolonged and unsuccessful negotiations, officials said Dude began reaching for a firearm, prompting SWAT officers to deploy less-lethal munitions to subdue him.
Dude was taken into custody at approximately 1:27 p.m. He was treated at the scene by the Albany Fire Department for minor injuries. No members of the public or law enforcement personnel were injured during the incident.
Authorities lifted the lockdown and reopened surrounding streets and public buildings by about 1:50 p.m.
The Albany Police Department credited the swift response and coordination of multiple agencies, including the Linn County Sheriff’s Office and the Oregon State Police, and thanked community members for remaining calm during the incident.
