Lane County, OR. — With the May 19, 2026 Primary Election approaching, Lane County elections officials are encouraging residents to register to vote or update their voter information ahead of the April 28 deadline.
Under Oregon law, voters must be registered or make any changes to their registration—including party affiliation—no later than April 28 to be eligible to participate in the primary election. Oregon operates under a closed primary system, meaning only voters registered with a political party can vote for that party’s candidates. However, all registered voters may still vote on nonpartisan races and ballot measures.
County Clerk Tommy Gong emphasized the importance of early preparation, noting that voters who want to participate fully in party primaries must confirm their registration status before the deadline.
Ballots for the election will begin mailing to voters on May 1. Residents can track their ballot status online and return completed ballots by mail, at official drop boxes, or directly to the Lane County Elections Office in Eugene.
Officials remind voters that mailed registrations must be postmarked by April 28, while online registrations must be completed by 11:59 p.m. that day. Hand-delivered forms must be received by 5:00 p.m. at the elections office.
