FLORENCE, Ore. — A bronze monument honoring Jessie M. Honeyman was significantly damaged last month in what authorities believe was an attempted theft at a coastal state park.
The monument, located near the Cleawox Day-use parking area in Florence, was vandalized sometime between the evening of March 2 and the morning of March 3. Officials say the structure appeared to have been knocked over and cut in two places, leaving it with extensive damage.
The artwork, known as the “Eye of the Needle,” was dedicated in 1986 to recognize Honeyman’s longstanding efforts to preserve Oregon’s natural landscapes and scenic highways. The sculpture, created by Gordon Newell, is a registered piece with the Smithsonian Institution.
Park staff have since removed the damaged monument to ensure public safety and to prevent further harm. Officials are currently assessing the extent of the damage and exploring options for repair, though no timeline has been established for its restoration or return.
Authorities are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact the Oregon State Police and reference case number SP26072324. Community members are encouraged to come forward as part of ongoing efforts to protect Oregon’s historic and cultural landmarks.
