EUGENE, Ore. (April 3, 2026) — Crews with Eugene Springfield Fire responded to a two-alarm apartment fire near downtown Eugene Friday afternoon that prompted a significant emergency response but resulted in no reported injuries.
At approximately 2:30 p.m., multiple residents called 911 to report smoke and flames coming from a first-floor unit in a two-story apartment building in the 1300 block of Lawrence Street.
Firefighters arriving on scene encountered heavy smoke and fire already spreading from the initial unit to an apartment on the second floor. Due to access challenges and the intensity of the fire, a second alarm was quickly requested to bring in additional resources to assist with searches for potential occupants and to attack the fire on multiple levels.
Truck 1 was the first unit on scene and crews immediately entered the burning apartment to begin searching for victims while working to slow the fire’s spread. Firefighters utilized portable 2.5-gallon water extinguishers, commonly referred to as “cans,” to knock down flames and provide protection as they advanced ahead of hose lines. These extinguishers are often used by crews on apparatus that do not carry pumps or hoses and can be critical in the early stages of interior firefighting.
An aggressive fire attack allowed crews to bring the blaze under control, successfully containing it to the original unit and one apartment above. Nearby units sustained moderate smoke damage.
Officials confirmed no injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
