PORTLAND, Ore. — A Multnomah County judge has sentenced a 22-year-old man to 30 years in prison for the fatal stabbing of a homeless man in Gresham and a separate attempted killing of another man experiencing homelessness.

Multnomah County Circuit Court Judge Christopher Marshall handed down the sentence March 31, 2026, to Antony Kassab in connection with two unprovoked attacks on strangers.

Kassab pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter in the killing of Cody Funk and to attempted second-degree murder for the assault on David McQuown.

According to prosecutors, the attacks were random and targeted individuals Kassab did not know. Multnomah County Senior Deputy District Attorney Sean Hughey, who prosecuted the case, said both victims were subjected to violence without warning.

“Cody Funk and David McQuown were both subjected to an unprovoked attack by a complete stranger,” Hughey said following the sentencing. “Cody Funk left behind a family who loved him, and while this sentence can provide some measure of accountability, no sentence can fill the void caused by this senseless killing.”

Investigators said the first attack occurred on December 26, 2023, at a bus stop in Gresham’s Rockwood neighborhood. Kassab stabbed Funk in the neck and chest. Funk was later found dead several blocks away.

In a second incident on February 9, 2024, Kassab stabbed McQuown multiple times in the face and torso while McQuown was seated outside a homeless shelter. McQuown survived the attack.

Authorities credited Gresham police detectives Justin Pick and Mark Hawley for their investigative work that led to Kassab’s arrest and conviction.

The Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office also recognized victim advocates Alie Aguilera and Alex Bidwell for supporting the victims’ families throughout the case.

Kassab will serve his sentence in the Oregon Department of Corrections.
