Miami, FL. — The Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation honored Cuban American businessman and activist Maximo Alvarez with the Truman Reagan Medal of Freedom during a March 17 ceremony in Miami, Florida.

Held at the Freedom Tower, the event recognized Alvarez’s decades long advocacy against communism and his contributions to American civic life. The historic venue once served as the Cuban Refugee Center, assisting thousands fleeing Castro’s regime between 1962 and 1974.

Alvarez, a participant in Operation Pedro Pan, was among more than 14,000 unaccompanied Cuban children sent to the United States to escape political repression. The program was organized by the Catholic Welfare Bureau under the leadership of Monsignor Bryan O. Walsh.

Presenting the award, Elizabeth Edwards Spalding praised Alvarez as a model of immigrant success, highlighting his achievements in business, philanthropy, and public engagement. She noted his enduring commitment to defending freedom and educating future generations.

Speakers at the ceremony included Carlos Trujillo, who recounted Alvarez’s journey from personal tragedy in Cuba to success in the United States, and Madeline Pumariega, who emphasized his impact as an inspirational figure for young Americans.

Accepting the medal, Alvarez reflected on his experiences as both a Cuban exile and American citizen, stressing the importance of remembering the victims of communist regimes. He expressed hope for a free Cuba while affirming his deep appreciation for the opportunities afforded by the United States.

Additional remarks were submitted by Rick Scott and Ashley Moody, while Ron DeSantis also offered congratulations recognizing Alvarez’s contributions to preserving the history and lessons of communism.
