Corvallis, OR. — The final phase of a major water infrastructure upgrade beneath the Marys River is set to begin in early March, according to city engineers.
The project will replace an aging 20-inch water pipeline located under SW 3rd Street just south of the Marys River. The existing pipe has reached the end of its service life and will be upgraded to a 36-inch diameter line. The new pipe will connect to the water main installed beneath the Marys River last summer, completing a multi-phase effort to modernize the system.
Construction is expected to begin during the first week of March. Because of the dense and complex network of underground utilities in the area, crews will use open trenching across SW 3rd Street to install the new pipeline.
To reduce disruptions to daytime traffic and nearby businesses, the city plans to shift to overnight construction beginning around March 9. Night work is anticipated to continue through April. Once that portion is complete, the project will return to a daytime schedule with fewer traffic impacts.
SW 3rd Street will remain open throughout construction. However, drivers should expect lane shifts, periodic lane closures and flaggers directing traffic. Sidewalk closures and pedestrian detours will also be in place at times.
City officials say the pipeline work is scheduled to wrap up before the Oregon Department of Transportation begins a planned resurfacing project along SW 3rd Street later this summer.
