Oregon — The nation’s 2026 tax filing season is officially underway, and taxpayers have until Wednesday, April 15, 2026, to file their 2025 federal and state tax returns. For many Oregonians, filing could mean receiving money back — even for those who are not required to file or who do not have a Social Security number.
This year’s returns may be especially important for Oregon residents, as the state’s $1.4 billion “kicker” refund will be distributed to eligible taxpayers who file. Refunds may also be available through credits such as the Earned Income Tax Credit and the Child Tax Credit, particularly for working families and households with young children.
Taxpayers may qualify for refunds if they worked during the year, paid more in tax withholding than required, or have children under age six and earned $30,000 or less. New tax law changes for 2025 could also increase refunds for some families, despite the added complexity those changes bring.
To help ensure residents do not leave money unclaimed, free tax filing assistance is available across Oregon. The Oregon Department of Human Services’ Tax Infrastructure Grant Program funds trusted, culturally relevant organizations, Tribal governments, and rural community groups to provide no-cost tax preparation for people with low incomes. Services are offered in multiple languages, with many providers also offering virtual filing options.
The Internal Revenue Service has stated that most taxpayers should be able to file and receive refunds without delay this season.
