Douglas County, OR. — The Oregon State Police Fish and Wildlife Division is investigating the unlawful killing and waste of a bull elk reported near Bear Creek off Hubbard Creek in the Umpqua area of Douglas County.
The incident occurred on Nov. 22, 2025, the opening day of Tioga Second Season. According to investigators, a reporting party heard a gunshot in the foggy early morning hours near the 8400 line. The following day, while hunting in the same area, the individual discovered a dead bull elk that had been shot and left unrecovered in a clear-cut.
The reporting party also observed three male subjects—possibly a grandfather, father, and son—walking in the vicinity where the elk was found. The men were wearing camouflage clothing and were not carrying firearms at the time of the sighting.
OSP Fish and Wildlife troopers are asking anyone who may have shot and lost a bull elk in the area, or who has information related to this incident, to contact the Turn In Poachers (TIP) hotline at 1-800-452-7888 or dial *OSP (677) from a mobile device. Callers are asked to reference case number SP25-479764.
The TIP program is a multi-agency partnership that encourages the public to report wildlife and habitat law violations. Information leading to an arrest or citation may be eligible for preference point rewards for big game species, including elk, as well as cash rewards funded by partner organizations.
