Lincoln County, OR. — The Oregon State Police Fish and Wildlife Division is asking for the public’s assistance in identifying whoever is responsible for the unlawful killing and waste of a cow elk discovered late last month in the Siuslaw National Forest near Waldport.
On November 28, troopers responded to a report of a dead cow elk in the Alsea Unit near the end of U.S. Forest Service Road 3462, just off USFS 58 Boundary Road. The cow elk had been shot and left entirely to waste. While searching the area, investigators also located intestinal remains from a bull elk, suggesting that someone had killed and taken a bull elk in the same remote area around the same time.
Based on the condition of the remains, OSP believes both elk were likely shot between November 22 and November 24.
Troopers are urging anyone with information that may help the investigation to contact the Oregon State Police Dispatch at 1-800-452-7888, call *OSP (*677) from a mobile phone, or email TIP@osp.oregon.gov. Callers should reference case number SP25-482212.
OSP also highlighted the Turn In Poachers (TIP) program, a statewide partnership that offers preference point rewards or cash incentives for information leading to arrests or citations in wildlife crimes. Rewards vary depending on the species involved, ranging from Oregon preference points for big game to cash awards for the unlawful take of wildlife, habitat destruction, and other violations.
More information—including reporting methods, reward details, and conservation partners—is available on the Oregon State Police TIP program website.
