WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Donald Trump has revealed plans for a new national monument in the capital, dubbed the “Independence Arch,” to commemorate America’s 250th birthday next summer.
According to a White House official, Trump personally conceived the design for the arch, which is modeled after France’s Arc de Triomphe. The monument would be placed in a traffic circle near the Arlington Memorial Bridge, connecting Virginia and Washington, D.C.
During a presentation Trump showcased scale models of the project, joking about its proportions:
“So that’s Lady Liberty. Lady, did you ever hear of Lady Liberty? But, uh, so the sizes would be very different than this lady. They did this and they did that. So this would be… small, medium, and large.”
The White House has yet to provide details about funding or the construction timeline for the project. The “Independence Arch” would become one of the most significant additions to the capital’s landscape in decades, symbolizing a revival of national pride for the country’s semiquincentennial celebration.
