Oregon — Oregon leaders from across the political spectrum are mourning the loss of State Representative Hòa Nguyễn, who passed away Thursday morning surrounded by loved ones after a courageous battle with cancer.
Nguyễn, who represented House District 48 from East Portland to Damascus, was celebrated for her deep commitment to Oregon’s children, families, and communities. Since taking office, she championed issues such as affordable child care, educational access, and community investment, values she carried from her background as an educator and advocate.
“Oregon has lost a kind and dedicated leader,” said Senate Majority Leader Kayse Jama. “Representative Nguyễn brought expertise in education and child development to the legislature, and her collaborative approach helped earn the passage of important policies on school attendance and child care access,” .
House Republican Leader Lucetta Elmer also reflected on Nguyễn’s legacy, saying, “Her deep commitment to Oregon’s children and families was evident in everything she did. It was an honor to serve with her and share in the work of strengthening early childhood care and education,” .
Colleagues across the aisle shared personal memories. Representative Anna Scharf called their time together on the House Committee on Early Childhood and Human Services “special,” while Representative Bobby Levy remembered their friendship built on faith, laughter, and mutual respect.
The Oregon House Democrats noted that Nguyễn’s life told “the story of possibility, from working in her family’s convenience store in Louisiana to serving in the Oregon Legislature. She asked that her life be remembered through continued efforts to make Oregon a “just, equitable, and compassionate place.”
Details about memorial services and opportunities to honor Representative Nguyễn’s life and legacy will be announced in the coming days.
