Portland – The annual League of Oregon Cities Conference is set to begin October 2 as President Donald Trump mulls a National Guard deployment. Mayor Keith Wilson sent the following letter to attendees:
Colleagues and Conference Attendees,
We are delighted to welcome you to Portland later this week for the League of Oregon Cities’ Annual Conference. As you prepare for your visit, I wanted to take a moment to address concerns some of you have raised with LOC staff.
First and foremost, Portland is a vibrant, welcoming, and safe city. Visitors and residents alike enjoy our thriving restaurants, local businesses, cultural institutions, and outdoor spaces every day. Our local law enforcement is more than ready and capable of handling local needs.
Unfortunately, some national stories have at times painted an incomplete and inaccurate picture of Portland. This exacerbates information that falsely substantiates the unnecessary deployment of federal law and immigration officers to Portland.
I continue to work closely with Governor Kotek, Attorney General Rayfield, and Mayors from across the state to quell unnecessary, wasteful use of federal resources within the Rose City and Oregon.
Portland remains one of the most dynamic and hospitable destinations in the Pacific Northwest. I am confident you will experience the warmth of our community, the beauty of our neighborhoods, and the creativity and resilience that define our city. There is no reason to be concerned about your safety during your time here.
Please rest assured that Portland is prepared to host a safe, secure and dynamic Annual Conference. We look forward to welcoming you and hope you’ll take time to explore all that Portland has to offer – whether it’s our renowned food scene, access to nature, or simply the chance to connect with colleagues and friends. Thank you for joining us.
We can’t wait to host you in Portland.
