SALEM, Ore. — A routine early-morning traffic stop on March 31, 2026, resulted in the arrest of a Salem man and a juvenile after officers discovered multiple loaded firearms inside a vehicle.
At approximately 2:47 a.m., officers stopped a black Mercedes driven by 19-year-old Brayan Cervantes Arias of Salem. During the stop, police learned Cervantes Arias had an outstanding arrest warrant out of Polk County.
As officers continued their investigation, they located a loaded handgun in the driver’s area of the vehicle. A second loaded handgun was found on a 16-year-old male passenger, also from Salem. Additionally, officers recovered a high-capacity magazine from inside the vehicle.
Cervantes Arias was taken into custody and booked into the Marion County Jail on charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and the outstanding warrant. The juvenile was also arrested for unlawful possession of a firearm and lodged at the Marion County Juvenile Detention Center.
The Salem Police Department reported that in 2025, officers seized 295 firearms in connection with criminal investigations. So far in 2026, the department has confiscated 106 firearms.
Officials say the arrests reflect ongoing efforts under the department’s Community Violence Reduction Initiative (CVRI), which aims to reduce violent crime and hold offenders accountable.
The investigation remains ongoing. Authorities say any additional inquiries should be directed to the Marion County District Attorney’s Office.
