Wasco County, OR. – In early March 2024, a Deputy Prosecutor from the Hood River District Attorney’s office and her friend a Victim Advocate with the Wasco County District Attorney’s office are alleged to have caused a scene in a local taphouse. Danielle Decant, a Deputy District Attorney from Hood River, entered Liberty Tapworks between 9pm – 10pm on March 8th, with several associates, according to a statement from the owner of Liberty Tapworks, Brandie Drake. This included Karen Schultz, Victim Advocate with the Wasco County District Attorney’s office, Louis Grossman a local attorney specializing in family and criminal law, and others. They were reported to have come from the campaign launch party for Kara Davis, who is running for Wasco County District Attorney against Travis Marston.
The current Wasco County District Attorney, Matthew Ellis, is running for Hood River District Attorney and has endorsed Kara Davis. Danielle reportedly began trying to debate with customers at Liberty Tapworks about her policies as a prosecutor around first time offenders, including those charged with domestic violence and rape. Brandie reported that several of her customers came to her and asked her to eject Danielle; she declined on the grounds of supporting free speech and encouraged them to discuss the issues or ask Danielle to leave them alone. Brandie stated it is well known that she is supporting Travis Marston, who is running against Kara Davis for the upcoming District Attorney’s election, and had a stack of his campaign stickers in the common area.
A patron who was there that night and provided information on the condition of anonymity reported that he saw Danielle and her boyfriend Louis Grossman there that evening. The patron stated that he saw them come in between 9pm and 10pm that evening and that Danielle was immediately very forward in pushing political conversations and discussing her ideas on law enforcement policies. The source reported seeing them crossing out Marston’s name on his campaign stickers and writing in Kara Davis’ name, as well as sticking them on people’s chests and backs. The source later found out later one had been stuck to their back without knowing it.
Another patron who also wished to remain anonymous corroborated the story and reported personally observing Danielle taking the stickers, crossing out Marston’s name, writing Kara Davis’ name, and sticking one of the stickers on the back of another patron at the taphouse. The source reported that this went on throughout the evening, and that they were warned multiple times to stop prior to Brandie asking the group to leave.
Brandie reports she was approached again by customers later in the evening and told that Danielle had taken some of the stickers, crossed Travis’ name out to write Kara Davis on them, and then stuck them on people’s chests without their permission. Following these customer complaints, Danielle and her colleagues were told to leave Liberty Tapworks. During the discussion, Louis Grossman, who is reportedly in a relationship with Danielle, told Brandie that Danielle had gone too far before they left.
Right Now Oregon reached out to candidate Travis Marston who declined to provide comment on the incident.
We also reached out to candidate Kara Davis, Wasco County District Attorney Matthew Ellis’ Office, and Hood River District Attorney Carrie Rasmussen. None of them responded to or acknowledged receipt of our request for comment as of the publication of this article.
