October 9, 2023 – City of Sweet Home: Facebook Post
The city has been in contact with the Army Corps of Engineers regarding the fish die-off at Green Peter this last weekend. Preliminary reports show that this incident is a consequence of the deep drawdown of Green Peter. Kokanee inhabit deeper waters and are being entrapped in the Army Corps’ regulating outlets and are injured by the dramatic change in pressure that occurs when they go from deep water to surface water as they move through the dam.
We are constantly testing the water at our treatment facility and have noticed no change in turbidity or quality. Sweet Home’s drinking water is still safe to drink and use as normal.
Once we have received more information from the Army Corp of Engineers, we will share their official statement. If you have further questions, please contact the Army Corps of Engineers. The city does not have jurisdiction over Green Peter or Foster dam, or the waters contained within them. We are also very concerned about the fish and will update when we know more.
