The two Winchester lever-action rifles accounted for about 58% of the 159,321 votes tallied on the question. The Colt Single Action Army revolver, nicknamed the “Peacemaker,” placed third with 23,934 votes, or 15.02%. The Model 1873, billed on the ballot as the “Gun that Won the West,” led the six choices with a plurality.

Idaho lawmakers placed the question on the general election ballot through House Bill 932, which passed 68–0 in the House and 32–0 in the Senate. The measure asked voters to choose one of six firearms. The result is nonbinding, and lawmakers would have to pass separate legislation to make any firearm an official state symbol.
