Two Cats Die in Northeast Bend Mobile Home Fire

BEND, Ore. — A mobile home was heavily damaged by fire Sunday night in northeast Bend after flames spread through a wall due to an improperly connected fireplace flue. The home’s resident escaped safely, but two cats died in the fire.

Bend Fire & Rescue crews responded at 8:58 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 25, after a resident called 911 to report a fire at Rock Arbor Villa Mobile Home Park off Northeast Purcell Boulevard.

Firefighters arrived to find the mobile home engulfed in flames, with fire extending to the roof. Crews quickly knocked down the fire and prevented it from spreading to neighboring homes.

The home’s sole resident was alerted by smoke alarms and safely evacuated. The fire caused an estimated $50,000 in damage to the home and its contents.

The American Red Cross was contacted to help the resident with temporary housing and other resources.

Investigators determined the fire originated behind a wall where the fireplace flue had been improperly connected. When a fire was lit in the fireplace, heat and flames entered the wall and ignited combustible materials.

Following the incident, Bend Fire & Rescue reminded residents to test their smoke alarms regularly to ensure they are working properly. Working smoke alarms provide an early warning that can help people escape a fire safely.

Fire officials also urged residents to have stoves and furnaces serviced and inspected before using them during the colder months. Loose connections can allow hot exhaust to enter walls, while debris can accumulate in flues during periods of inactivity. Regular cleaning and maintenance can also help prevent fires caused by creosote or ash buildup.

More information about smoke alarms is available through the city’s website at bendoregon.gov/alarm-info.
