The League of Women Voters Union County Oregon announces a Candidates Forum, with an open candidates meet-and-greet prior to the main event.

5:00 pm Meet-and-Greet with city council, mayoral and all Union County candidates

6:00 pm Welcome and Candidates Forum for Commissioner, State Representative races, and local ballot measures 

City representatives from La Grande and Elgin have been invited to answer questions on city ballot measures. County Commissioner candidates Donna Beverage, Cory Miller, and Matt Scarfo, and State Representative candidate Brian Campbell will answer questions in an open-to-all candidates forum. 

While Cory Miller won his race for county commissioner in the primary, the League is committed to giving all three candidates an opportunity to speak. 

Incumbent state Rep. Bobby Levy declined the League’s invitation, but is planning to share information with voters through VOTE411. 

Questions are welcomed in advance and will be read by the moderator. They may be edited or combined for clarity and brevity. The League’s goal is to ensure that questions are fair, objective, and nonpartisan. 

“Our League Unit is excited to hold its first in-person candidates’ forum in Union County. We hope voters will come early for an informal 5:00 meet-and-greet, and stay for the presentations and questions beginning at 6:00 PM.”

“Since it’s the League, you can trust that partisan politics will be left outside the building. Our job is to help provide the information voters need to make an informed vote this November.”  

In total, nearly 50 candidates will appear on ballots within Union County. The all-volunteer League of Women Voters of Union County does not have the capacity to host forums for every race, but is working on options to allow every candidate to be fairly represented. 

The League’s plan is to help get the word out on other nonpartisan forums, including city council races. All candidates are encouraged to submit candidate statements to the League’s national VOTE411.org platform and submit short nonpartisan video links. 

League of Women Voters’ meetings and events support civil discourse by focusing on listening with respect to all viewpoints, reducing misinformation and disinformation, and steering clear of partisan or character attacks. LWV does not support or oppose any political party or candidate, and therefore does not allow political hats, t-shirts, signs, flyers, campaign materials, or pins at its events.
