73-Year-Old Mountain Biker Rescued After Injury in Cline Butte Area

DESCHUTES COUNTY, Ore. — A 73-year-old Bend man was rescued Sunday afternoon after suffering injuries while mountain biking in the Cline Butte Recreational Area near Barr Road.

The Deschutes County 9-1-1 center received a call at about 1:29 p.m. Sept. 20 reporting an injured mountain biker. A Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office Special Services deputy contacted the man by phone and determined that a Search and Rescue response was needed because of the remote location and reported injuries.

A rescue team consisting of one deputy and five Search and Rescue volunteers responded to the scene. After conducting an initial medical assessment, rescuers requested assistance from Redmond Fire & Rescue.

Because of the rugged terrain, Redmond Fire & Rescue used a side-by-side utility terrain vehicle to reach the injured rider.

AirLink was also dispatched because of concerns about the severity of the man’s injuries. The helicopter landed near the scene, where Search and Rescue volunteers transported the rider by litter to the aircraft.

The man was flown to St. Charles Bend for medical treatment.

The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office thanked the Search and Rescue volunteers, 9-1-1 dispatchers and Redmond Fire & Rescue personnel for their coordinated response.
