A 55-year-old Ohio man died after a motorcycle crash on Highway 86 near Richland in Baker County on Monday morning, according to Oregon State Police.
Troopers responded to the single-vehicle crash at about 9:44 a.m. September 14 near milepost 31.
The preliminary investigation found that Lance H. Madden, 55, of Loveland, Ohio, was riding a silver BMW motorcycle eastbound on Highway 86 when he failed to negotiate a left-hand turn. The motorcycle entered the soft gravel shoulder, and Madden lost control while attempting to return to the roadway.
The motorcycle overturned, sending Madden and the motorcycle down an approximately 20-foot embankment toward the river.
Baker County Search and Rescue personnel conducted a rope rescue to recover Madden from the area. He was transported by Life Flight to an area hospital with serious injuries.
Oregon State Police later learned that Madden had died at the hospital.
The crash affected traffic on Highway 86 for approximately two hours while investigators worked at the scene.
The Baker County Sheriff’s Office, Baker County Search and Rescue, Richland Ambulance and the Oregon Department of Transportation assisted Oregon State Police with the response.
