President Donald Trump ordered American flags lowered to half-staff nationwide for one week following the death of country music legend Dolly Parton at age 80.
Trump announced that the tribute would begin at 6 p.m. Tuesday, calling Parton “one of the greatest country singers” and saying her death was a loss for millions of people.
“There has never been anyone like her, and never will,” Trump wrote. “Rest in Peace, Dolly! The World loves you.”
Parton built a seven-decade career spanning music, film and business. She was also widely recognized for her philanthropy, particularly the Imagination Library, which has provided millions of free books to children.
The Tennessee native recorded enduring hits including “Jolene,” “9 to 5” and “I Will Always Love You.” Tributes from elected officials, entertainers and fans followed the announcement of her death Tuesday. Her cause of death was not immediately disclosed.
